UB Fraternity Featured on MTV
In 2003, a University at Buffalo fraternity gained national attention by participating in the MTV reality series "Fraternity Life." The show's first season followed Sigma Chi Omega, a small local fraternity at UB, during the Fall 2002 pledging period. Sigma Chi Omega members and pledges were filmed for 13 episodes aired in Spring 2003, alongside a UB sorority featured in MTV's concurrent "Sorority Life 2." UB administration was not officially involved in the production, allowing MTV to film on campus only with university observers present.[1]
Campus and Media Reactions
[edit | edit source]The MTV portrayal of Sigma Chi Omega led to immediate controversy. Shortly after episodes aired, UB received numerous complaints about possible hazing rituals depicted on the show. In one scene, fraternity pledges were shown lined up against a wall being reprimanded by brothers, which raised hazing concerns. UB officials responded by suspending Sigma Chi Omega in March 2003 pending investigation of hazing allegations, enforcing a "timeout" on all activities. Around the same time, another episode revealed several pledges sneaking into the Buffalo Zoo after-hours as a prank to "steal" an animal. This prompted the zoo to press charges for trespassing against the students and a review by the Erie County District Attorney.[2][3]
The so-called "Buffalo Zoo Incident," which showed pledges climbing a zoo wall on camera, drew criticism for endangering animals and students - UB's Vice President for Student Affairs lamented that "stupid activities by a few individuals" had marred an otherwise unique opportunity to showcase campus life.[3] Local and national media covered these developments, and UB publicly distanced itself from the unruly behavior captured on MTV.
Aftermath
[edit | edit source]As a result of the hazing and trespass incidents, Sigma Chi Omega remained suspended through 2003, and its campus recognition was revoked for a time. The fraternity's members avoided serious legal penalties (the zoo prank led to university disciplinary hearings, but no criminal convictions).[4] In subsequent years, Sigma Chi Omega worked to reform and eventually regained good standing as a recognized campus fraternity. By the early 2010s, the chapter had been reinstated by UB and returned to normal status on campus.[5]
As of today, Sigma Chi Omega remains an active Greek organization at UB. The MTV series itself is remembered as a curious footnote in UB's history - one that brought brief fame and notoriety to the UB Greek scene.
