"UB Foundation is missing $25 million" refers to a student-driven speculation that around $25,000,000 went unaccounted for in the finances of the University at Buffalo Foundation (UBF). The UB Foundation is a private non-profit organization that manages University at Buffalo's endowment, donations, and certain real estate and financial assets, totaling over $1,000,000,000 in assets as of recent years.[1] Because the UBF operates with relative autonomy and is not subject to to full public disclosure (it's legally separate from the university and exempt from FOIL laws), it has long been the center of debate over transparency. This climate of limited transparency has occasionally given rise to rumors and concerns about UBF's financial management. Among these is the claim - popular in student online forums - that a sum of $25 million went "missing" or was improperly unaccounted.

Origins of the $25 Million Claim

[edit | edit source]

The notion that $25 million was missing from UB's coffers emerged in student discussions. In a 2024 thread on r/UBreddit, a student asked: "Word is that UB lost $25 million and is apparently cutting the College of Arts and Sciences. Does anyone know if that's true?"[2] However, many of the comments on this post claimed that this is not true, often citing that there is no source to back up this rumor - but it is unknown whether the original poster meant budget cuts within CAS or actually meant removing CAS entirely.

No verified public record ever confirmed $25 million to be missing at the UB Foundation. The university's administration did not announce any loss, nor did audited financial statements show an obvious disappearance of funds in that amount. This claim is therefore, most likely, false, or at least unverified.
