The Student Union at the University at Buffalo (UB) is the central student activity building on the university's North Campus in Amherst, NY. It functions as a hub for student life, hosting a variety of services, dining facilities, student organization offices, and social spaces for the UB community. Opened in stages during the 1980s to 1990s, the Student Union (often abbreviated SU) was built to replace UB's original Student Union on the South Campus (then called Norton Hall)[1], which closed in 1982. Today, the Student Union is an expansive complex of over 173,000 square feet[1] that serves tens of thousands of students and staff, providing a place for gatherings and daily campus life.

History and Development

[edit | edit source]

UB's Student Union was constructed in two major phases. The initial portion opened in 1985 (then called the Student Activities Center) and an expansion was completed in 1992.[2] The combined facility was officially dedicated on November 21st, 1992, with a formal opening ceremony and several commemorative events. The dedication featured UB President William R. Greiner and other dignitaries, and included installation of a memorial plaque and a UB seal in the lobby floor - gifts from the student body and alumni.[3] The Student Union's construction was part of UB's broader campus expansion to the suburbs - when the North Campus was developed in the 1970s, it initially lacked a student union, so this facility was served to fulfill the social and extracurricular needs of a growing student population. The architecture features a multi-level design with a large open atrium.

The Student Union has been the home for UB's Student Association (SA) and Graduate Student Association (GSA) - the undergraduate and graduate student governments (respectively) - and various Student Life offices. The building includes amenities such as a theater, 400-person conference area with movable walls, lounges and study areas, and recreational spaces. Over the years, the Student Union has housed campus dining outlets, a game room, and a ticket office.[1]

Facilities and Services

[edit | edit source]

The Student Union's layout spans three floors, organized around a large open lobby on the first level. Major facilities include the dining areas, one of which being the Union Marketplace and Eatery, a dining facility each containing their own "food stations," including Union Station (subs and wraps), Halal Shack (Middle Eastern foods), Piza Pizza (pizza), and Fowl Play (chicken fingers and fries).[4] Union Station used to contain Stackers, a beloved place that contained burgers, but this was shut down and replaced by the Halal Shack in 2025.[5] In addition to Union Marketplace and Eatery, SU has Moe's (a Southwest Mexican grill) and Tim Horton's (a primarily Canadian cafe and bakery). Vending machines are also available on the 1st floor as well as UB Campus Tees, a merchandise store.

Student Union also has Bravo Pasta on the second floor, next to Edgy Veggies (previously located on the first floor in Union Marketplace and Eatery but got moved to the second floor). The second floor used to contain Breadbox Deli, but this was also closed by UB.[6] Sabor Latino, a restaurant with Latin American food, is also on the second floor[7], but many students have complained about their limited hours of 11 AM - 2 PM on weekdays only (during peak class hours).[8][9][10]

The Union provides office space for student government (SA and GSA), an information desk, a Ticket Office, and a KeyBank ATM. The lower level is also connected to Knox Hall via a tunnel while the second story is connected to The Commons via a bridge. Many Student Life administrative units are headquartered in the Union, including the Office of Student Engagement, the Intercultural and Diversity Center, and the Orientation and First-Year Programs.

Renovations

[edit | edit source]

In 2018, UB began planning for a significant renovation project for the Student Union, and construction was carried out in phases during the 2023-2024 academic year and Fall 2024 semester. The Student Union Renovation Project, completed in early 2025, focused on creating a more open, welcoming environment and adding modern amenities. In the first phase, completed in Fall 2024, the building's main lobby was expanded - a large interior "walkway room" was removed and replaced with a smaller glass entryway, making the main portion of the building larger. A new grand staircase was built linking the second and third floors, improving circulation between levels. The second phase replaced flooring, installed new contemporary furniture, included new lighting, and added acoustical panels to reduce noise in gathering areas.[11] The overall goal was to give the Union the ambiance of a comfortable "living room" for students.

During the construction period (especially 2023-2024), the Student Union was shrunk to a much smaller size as temporary walls were put in place between the portion of SU being renovated and the portion still open to students. The Student Union officially reopened on January 15th, 2025, after roughly a year of construction disruptions. UB President Satish K. Tripathi described the renovations as an investment in student experience, noting that while academics are primary, "we know how important it is for our students to have a robust student experience - gathering, socializing, getting involved in clubs and organizations."[12]

Significance and Campus Life

[edit | edit source]

The Student Union plays a central role in UB's campus culture. It is the venue for countless student-driven events - ranging from international education displays to blood drives. Having replaced the aging Norton Union of South Campus, the North Campus Student Union symbolized UB's transition to a modern, residential campus in Amherst. Its continued evolution - like the recent renovations - reflects UB's effort to adapt to changing student needs. The Union is fully accessible and includes lactation rooms and prayer/meditation spaces to accommodate community needs.

Relationship to The Commons

[edit | edit source]

Directly across from the Student Union is the UB Commons, a privately owned retail complex with additional dining options. The Commons complements the Union by offering restaurants (although not covered by meal plans there), shops, and services.
