For undergraduate students, the department offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Classics and a Minor in Classics. The BA and Minor programs have three tracks: Classical Languages and Literature, Classical Civilization, and Greek and Roman Culture.[2]

The department also offers three study abroad programs for undergraduate students: The Art and Archaeology of Greece, The Monteverdi Archaeological Field School in Italy, and UB Classics in the Mediterranean.[3]

The Department of Classics offers a Master of Arts (MA) program and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.[4] The MA program has optional concentrations in Ancient History and Latin.[5] Students in the PhD program must choose to concentrate in Ancient History, Language and Literature, or Mediterranean Archaeology.[6]

The department is affiliated with several research projects, facilities, and institutes:

Funding Concerns

[edit | edit source]

In March 2024, Classics courses were unavailable on Schedule Builder for students to register for.[11] Fearing funding cuts to the department and hiring freezes, students staged a protest. Students cited an ongoing lack of support and funding for the department and for all of the humanities at UB.[12]

The University and College of Arts and Sciences denied these allegations of cuts and freezes.[13]
