Flint Village is a set of on-campus student apartments at the University at Buffalo located on North Campus. Finished in 2001, it was the fourth apartment-style housing project built as part of UB's expansion of on-campus housing in the late 1990s to early 2000s. Flint Village consists of nine residential buildings (6 two-story and 3 three-story structures) containing 236 furnished apartments with a total of 536 beds.[1][2] The apartments include one bedroom, two bedroom, and four bedroom units, and primarily consist of upper-division undergraduates as well as graduate and professional students (with two of its buildings initially reserved for law students when it first opened).[2] Flint Village is not owned by UB; rather, it is owned by the UB Foundation and operated by UB Campus Living.

History and Development

Flint Village was dedicated on August 17th, 2001, with UB President William R. Greiner presiding over its opening ceremony. The project cost $22.65 million to construct, funded through the UB Foundation and UB Alumni Association without state taxpayer money. It was developed by American Campus Communities with design by the Buffalo-based architecture firm Lauer-Manguso Associates and built by ADF Construction.[2] Flint Village followed three other new apartment complexes (Flickinger Court in 1998, Hadley Village in 1999, and South Lake Village in 2000), as part of UB's plan to increase on-campus housing capacity from the late 1990s onward. With Flint's opening, UB's North Campus residential population grew to over 5,500 students, up from 3,800 five years earlier.[3]

Flint Village's design is considered to be community-oriented. Unlike Hadley Village's separate townhouse-style buildings, Flint's apartments are connected by interior corridors and a common lounge, to foster interaction and engagement between students. Each building includes communal laundry facilities and shared entrances, features intended to create a "community within a community" for residents. UB President Greiner praised Flint Village's brick architecture and prominent location at the campus entrance for signaling that "students both live and work" on campus.[3]

Facilities and Living Arrangements

Flint Village offers one-bedroom (one bathroom), two-bedroom (one or two bathrooms), and four bedroom (two bathrooms) furnished apartments, all with kitchens and living rooms. Depending on layouts, students either have a private bathroom or share a bathroom with the equivalent to one roommate. Apartments are air-conditioned down to 68F and include standard furniture and appliances, such as full-sized beds, a desk for each bedroom, a sofa, a microwave, and an oven and stovetop. Flint Village's community building (300 Flint Village) features a lounge and the front desk, which is where packages and mail are picked up.

The residential buildings have at least one laundry room (with two washers and two dryers), and for buildings with multiple laundry rooms (such as 308 Flint Village, which houses two-bedroom apartments), residents may use another laundry room to reduce wait times (although this is not the case for buildings with one laundry room, such as 309 Flint Village, which houses one-bedroom apartments). The apartments are fully wired for internet and cable TV, and the cost of rent includes all utilities with the exception of Cable TV, which the University at Buffalo discontinued for on-campus housing, meaning it is no longer an option.[4]
