The "Governors Arsonist" is an unidentified individual responsible for an attempted arson incident at the Governors Complex in October 2023. This event led to significant disruptions for residents and garnered attention within the UB community, particularly on online platforms such as Reddit's r/UBreddit.

The Incident

[edit | edit source]

On October 15th, 2023, at approximately 4:00 AM, a fire alarm was triggered in the Governors Complex due to a suspected gas leak. Residents were evacuated and relocated to the Natural Sciences Complex for safety. Subsequent investigations revealed that an unknown individual had attempted to start a fire on a stove in a third-floor kitchen. A staff member intervened before the items left on the stove ignited, but the building's fire alarm system was still activated.[1]

Investigation and Aftermath

[edit | edit source]

Following the incident, all kitchens within the Governors Complex were closed for several weeks to facilitate investigations. The UB Police Department (UBPD) conducted interviews and identified a person of interest. However, after consulting with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the NYS Bureau of Criminal Investigations, authorities concluded that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with an arrest.[1]

The closures of communal kitchens impacted students' daily routines, particularly those who relied on the facilities for cooking and cleaning.

Community Response

The incident sparked discussions among UB students, especially on the r/UBreddit subreddit.
