The Clemens Hall suicide refers to an incident at the University at Buffalo (UB) in which a 20-year-old undergraduate student died by suicide in Clemens Hall on UB's North Campus on December 11th, 2019. Clemens Hall, an academic building with a multi-story open stairwell, became the focus of student concern after the incident. University officials confirmed the student's death as an apparent suicide and extended condolences to the student's family, friends, and classmates.[1]
Community Response
[edit | edit source]In the aftermath, UB provided counseling services to the campus community and temporarily closed Clemens Hall in the evenings as a precaution while officials reviewed building safety measures and mental health resources.[2] The incident prompted student-led calls for improved safety infrastructure. UB student Daniel Barbieri created an online petition urging the university to install higher railings or suicide-prevention barriers in Clemens Hall's stairwells and other potentially dangerous spots on campus. The petition gained support from students sharing condolences and advocating for better mental health support.[2]
UB administrators acknowledged the petition and stated they were reviewing the tragedy "from multiple perspectives," including an evaluation of Clemens Hall's design and the availability of student mental health services. Students on social media also voiced frustration at the lack of protective barriers, with some lamenting the absence of "a suicide net or other safety barrier in Clemens" and urged that the student not become "just another" statistic.[3]
UB's Official Response
[edit | edit source]UB's official response emphasized safety and mental health. In a public statement, UB's president described the week as "very difficult" for the university community and underscored that counseling and crisis services were available.[2] Out of respect for the family, the student's name was not released by officials.[1]
A small memorial and moment of reflection were informally held on campus.
