New page

The Department of Management Science and Systems (MGS) is a department in the [[School of Management]] focusing on the intersection of business and technology. It teaches students how to design, develop, and use information systems to improve organizational performance and covers both the technical and managerial aspects of information technology in business. Its mission is to produce graduates who can leverage computing technologies, data analytics, and quantitative methods to solve complex business problems and deliver value to businesses.

== Academic Programs ==
Management Science and Systems offers a range of academic programs. One of these is the undergraduate concentration in Management Information Systems (MIS) for the Business Administration BS degree, which allows business majors to learn business administration while taking on a focus in the subject.

Information Technology and Management BS is an undergraduate degree offered by the School of Management's Department of Management Science and Systems that enables students to learn how to apply information technology in a business to solve managerial problems and optimize business processes. Students in ITM learn core managerial topics as well as technical skills, including programming, database management, systems analysis and design, and business analytics. The curriculum prepares students for careers such as systems analyst, IT project manager, or other roles at the interface of IT and business. It is different from Computer Science in that rather than being the theory of how computers work from a mathematical and theoretical standpoint, it is instead the application of IT in businesses.

Within the full-time MBA (Masters in Business Administration) program, the MGS department offers two distinct focus areas. The Information Security Management focus area focuses on topics such as cybersecurity, IT risk management, and information security auditing, training MBA students to protect and secure information resources in organizations.<ref>https://management.buffalo.edu/degree-programs/master-of-business-mba/program/focus-areas/information-security.html</ref> The Information Systems and E-Business focus area, on the other hand, covers broader applications of IT in business, such as business analytics, e-commerce strategies, and IT project management.<ref>https://management.buffalo.edu/degree-programs/master-of-business-mba/program/focus-areas/information-systems-e-business.html</ref> These MBA focus areas are designed to meet marketplace demand for managers who understand technology-driven innovation and can lead IT initiatives.

Furthermore, UB's Management Information Systems MS degree is a one-year specialized graduate program focusing on applying technology and information systems to solve managerial problems. The curriculum delivers advanced topics such as systems analysis and design, data warehousing, business analytics, enterprise IT architecture, and IT project manager. Students learn to leverage technology to obtain advantages for businesses.<ref>https://management.buffalo.edu/degree-programs/master-of-science-ms/information-systems/program/curriculum.html</ref>

At the doctoral level, the department offers two tracks for PhD students - Management Science, and Management Systems. PhD candidates in Management Science might focus on the scientific aspects of management, such as a mathematical viewpoint of decision making, statistics, and behavioral science. PhD candidates in Management Systems, on the other hand, might focus on a more hands-on and applied approach to management information systems, earning a doctorate-level degree that covers the application of systems to business and management and other skills such as analytics, decision making, and information assurance.<ref>https://management.buffalo.edu/degree-programs/phd-in-management/program/science-systems.html</ref>
