Sizzles Incident
The Sizzles Incident is a notorious piece of UB campus lore involving an individual who allegedly entered a campus eatery completely naked while under the influence of hallucinogens. According to student accounts on Reddit and other forums, at some point in the early 2010s, a male student - reportedly high on LSD or psychedelic mushrooms - walked into Sizzles completely naked and attempted to order food. The bizarre spectacle was witnessed by other students, at least one of whom - user u/Shadow1787 on Reddit - claimed to have taken a photo of the incident. In the retellings, the nude individual realizes the gravity of his actions only after the fact and was so mortified that he supposedly dropped out of school soon afterward.

The veracity of some details remains anecdotal, as no official campus police report or news article was publicly recorded for the event. However, on UB's subreddit, students frequently references the Sizzles incident, and the tale became so well-known that a parody Twitter account called "UB Naked Guy" even emerged, further entrenching the incident in campus folklore.

In early 2020, Yousouf Amolegbe, then-president of the Student Association, was suspended for conflict of interest between the Student Association (SA) and RAGE Boyz Entertainment, a company for which he was co-CEO.

Conflict of Interest & Initial Suspension
On January 31, 2020, Amolegbe was suspended by the SA Board of Directors (BOD) for planning to host rapper Fivio Foreign at SA's Trap Fest on the same night he planned to host the rapper for an event hosted by his company RAGE Boyz Entertainment. Under his deal, SA would have paid Fivio Foreign $9,500 to cover transportation and enable RAGE Boyz to book him for "much cheaper.". The following Sunday, 763 people signed a petition urging the BOD to lift the suspension, which would require a two-thirds majority vote.

Results of Investigation
The initial investigation by the Rules, Administration and Government Oversight committee (RAGO) found him guilty of conflict-of-interest violations related to SA events. The committee found Amolegbe guilty of violations including: DJ Mike West's appearance at Spring Fest 2019, Amolegbe's alleged failure to familiarize himself with SA's conflict-of-interest policy, his alleged failure to disclose RAGE Boyz as a potential conflict of interest, his failure to disclose DJ Wire's alleged affiliation with RAGE Boyz, his allegedly booking West for Winter Gala after being informed it would be a conflict of interest, his failure to disclose West as his roommate and the co-CEO of RAGE Boyz, and his arrangement with Fivio Foreign.

The BOD spent six hours in meeting to discuss the suspension and what to do going forward. The board revealed its reasons for suspending Amolegbe, the report of which students criticized. Students claimed Amolegbe was unfairly targeted and was held to a higher standard than his peers, specifically then-Vice President Georgia Hulbert, who allegedly was neglecting office hours without reprimand. Toward the end of the meeting, Amolegbe declared he would step down from his CEO role if the suspension was lifted. Some called in "honorable", and either an acknowledgement of wrongdoing or an effect of his "love" for SA. Others weren't swayed by his promise.

The vote needed two-thirds majority to pass. Eight members voted to lift the suspension, five voted against, and six abstained, causing the vote to fail, meaning Amolegbe's suspension was upheld.

Aftermath
Further details as to the outcome have currently been lost to time and/or may not have been fully resolved due to the university shutting down a month later due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A Reddit megathread was created to follow the details of the case, but no further updates have been provided.. According to LinkedIn, Amolegbe was no longer president of SA as of September 2020 and is still involved with his company RAGE Boyz.

In October 2022, Buffalo State student Tyler Lewis, age 19, was fatally stabbed by a UB student during a botched robbery attempt on North campus. The stabbing was ruled as self-defense.

Incident
Around 7:30 PM on October 14, 2022, Tyler Lewis was stabbed in the chest near the Richmond Quad. An RA called for assistance and officers arrived to provide first aid until EMS arrived within 11 minutes. He was taken to ECMC by ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead. Initial details at the scene identified a person of interest as a white man between the ages of 19 and 22 with light brown hair and average build and height. The suspect was reportedly wearing a mustard-colored shirt that was covered in blood and had several cuts on his face. UPD stated that they did not see any danger immediately after the event, but still increased patrol in the area around the Ellicott Complex.

Investigation
Due to the complicated nature of the incident, initial details of the investigation were kept quiet and the mother of the victim hired a private investigator and offered a reward for any information related to her son's alleged murder.. In January 2023, the Chief of University Police put out a statement to students asking for any information they could give regarding the incident.

The investigation would ultimately reveal that Tyler Lewis had come to UB's campus with friends to buy marijuana from a student in the dorms, and they planned on robbing him during the process. The DA stated that evidence showed that Lewis and other people attacked the student selling marijuana and attempted to steal his drugs and money. The student used a knife to fight off the attackers, which resulted in Lewis' death.
Aftermath & Legal Proceedings
The case was taken before a grand jury and in March 2023, it was ruled that the stabbing was self-defense and no charges would be brought against the attacker. The attacker un-enrolled from UB shortly after the news and his current status and identity are unknown to the public.

Lewis' mother has since refused to accept the outcome of the investigations and has continued advocating for her son's death as murder, despite evidence to the contrary. In January 2023, she sued both UB and Buffalo State, alleging both universities "failed to properly vet students prior to admission and admitted students known to have a violent history." Buffalo State declined to comment, but a spokesperson for UB stated the claims made were not supported by the evidence.

In September 2023, a State Supreme Court judge ruled that grand jury documents containing the names of those involved in the fatal on-campus stabbing would remain sealed. Lewis' mother wanted to list those involved as defendants in an ongoing civil suit. As far as is understood, the civil case is still on-going.

UBPhdPhys: UBPhdPhys moved page COVID Pandemic Controversies to COVID-19 Pandemic Controversies: Misspelled title

In 2020, the university closed completely for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester. However, by Fall 2020, things were back in-person in a limited capacity. Strict regulations were to be followed by faculty and students alike. Many controversies came up from how UB handled communications, testing, and state regulations.

Regulations
Once the vaccine became available to everyone state- and nation-wide, it became required to get the vaccination to attend classes. Before that point, students and faculty with in-person interactions would be randomly selected to test for COVID. After a while, it was required that students would get tested weekly for COVID if they were to be on-campus in any capacity. Testing sites were set up in various locations around campus such as Greiner and Talbert Halls. The testing sites were not of much use given that (per a COVID dashboard that no longer exists) a very small minority of the entire student body was following through with weekly testing and the positive test rate on-campus with such a large number of unexposed students getting tested every week sat at less than 1%.

Per state regulations, UB created a rolling two-week period of tracking cases where they would report the number of tests - positive and negative - that went through their system in over a two-week period. Campus would remain open as long as there were not 100 positive cases in a given two-week period. It was planned that for the Fall 2020 semester, campus would remain closed after Thanksgiving break and classes and finals would go online.

Students who were to be on campus at this time were required to complete a daily health checklist on their phone which would ask them about symptoms or possiblity of COVID. Passing this check allowed them to be on campus.

Through the Fall 2021 semester, extra time was put between classes, allotting for 20 minutes instead of the regular 10 minutes. This allowed instructional faculty and custodial staff to sanitize rooms between classes.

Controversies
Numerous controversies came from UB's implementation of their COVID policies. Early into the semester, there was a brief spike of COVID cases that was still well below the threshold for closing campus. However, it was noted as worth keeping an eye on. With no evidence, the university and President Tripathi sent emails to any off-campus housing in the area to stop any partying, gatherings, etc. Evidence would later show that COVID spikes were on-campus, not off-campus and yet no retractions or apologies were made.

UB was also criticized heavily for its methods of testing. The weekly COVID testing was considered a waste of time and resources. A majority of students did not follow the testing and even those who did had a positive test rating well below the national and state averages. Additionally, the daily checklist was purely honor system based and had no merit. Students had no incentive to fill it out honestly given saying "yes" to even having a stuffy nose would lead them to be "disqualified" from coming to campus.

The biggest controversy came when a week before Thanksgiving break in 2020, the COVID case counter spiked over the 100-case limit and per state regulation, the university should have shut down immediately without any further notice. However, despite an insistence on following regulations strictly, UB did not close down a week early and remained open over the threshold, violating state policy. This did not sit well with students given the unwarranted harrassment thrown at them over the early stages of the pandemic. No legal action ever came of UB violating state regulation in this regard.

Pushing more time between classes led to many issues. While wipes and hand sanitizer was installed across campus in nearly every room, understaffing due to the pandemic led to not every room always having proper supplies for cleaning rooms promptly. Additionally, students did not need extra time to physically move from one classroom to the next. Often, students had classes in the same building right down the hall. This led to gatherings of students outside classrooms for longer periods of time more than usual. This extra time also limited the time slots throughout the day for classes. This pushed classes late into the night and onto Saturdays. Some departments ran into unintentional issues where classes and/or lab sessions were inadvertently scheduled at the same time as weekend midterm exams.

Mrs. Rich's Corner Cafe was a small food spot in the Natural Science Complex that provided hot pre-made food, sandwiches, and drinks. It closed during the COVID-19 pandemic and has seen been replaced with Bull on the Run.

Overview
While specific dates cannot be found, Mrs. Rich's Cafe opened in the mid-2000s. The menu provided plenty of options to students as well as (once upon a time) fresh cinammon rolls. The highlight of Mrs. Rich's Cafe was pre-made hot food that students could grab quickly on their way to classes. This was also once provided by Capen Cafe, but the service has since stopped. Unfortunately, the open nature of the food spot and displays blocking views from the register led to plenty of students stealing, causing damage to the business.

Closure & Replacement
Unfortunately, like many campus dining facilities, Mrs. Rich's Corner Cafe closed during the COVID-19 pandemic and did not re-open. In November 2023, it was replaced by Bulls on the Run, which offers similar grab-and-go food as Capen Cafe.

Bert's was a beloved dining spot located in Talbert Hall on North campus. It was known for its great options and having "the best cookies." Having opened in the early 1990s, Bert's closed temporarily in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and permanently shortly after with the construction and opening of One World Cafe.

Overview
Bert's was located in the back of Talbert Hall, across from the diner seating and down from the NY Deli. Bert's included a wide variety of food stations including a breakfast/grill area, daily pizza selections, Mexican food, and a vegetarian station known as "Edgy Veggie."

Closure
Along with the rest of campus, Bert's closed temporarily when the university closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the university re-opened that fall, Bert's remained closed. It soon became known that Bert's would not re-open due to the opening of the One World Cafe. Bert's remains empty with a gate across its entrance, with only a rare glimpse inside when they empty it out.

Legacy
Students still love and miss Bert's, wishing it would open back up. It provided another food alternative on campus to what was available on that side of the Spine and the Student Union/The Commons on the other end. Reddit is full of posts reminiscing on Bert's. Students who have long since graduated still talk about it. It is unlikely to ever re-open. However, students still hope that the space will get used again. As of May 2025, there are no known plans for the space to be used.
CVS in the Commons was a CVS Pharmacy store located at 520 Lee Entrance Commons from January 1991 until January 2022. It was one of the original tenants of the UB Commons and allegedly the last remaining one.

Overview
CVS was the only pharmacy/drugstore on North campus. While it did not have a working pharmacy, it did act otherwise as a typical CVS store - school supplies, bandages, drinks, frozen foods, etc. The location also acted as an on-campus job opportunity for students and an alternative to traveling to the Boulevard Mall (now defunct) and Walmart via weekend shuttles. The location remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic and was a primary source of over-the-counter medicines and hygiene products for students on campus.

Closure
In November 2021, it was suddenly reported by The Spectrum that the location would be abruptly shutting down in January 2022 as part of CVS's larger closure of 900 locations across the US. Students were furious at the closure, saying it would be "detrimental" to campus life. Employees were only notified briefly ahead of the public at a "mandatory staffing meeting" of the impending closure . The manager told employees that the store was "lucky to even make $100 in a day" during the pandemic, much to the disbelief of students who frequented the store.

Aftermath
As of May 21, 2025, the former location still remains empty, but is now for lease. The Commons is a private entity so UB does not have any jurisdiction over the decision-making process of what may return to the location. The UB Student Bookstore has attempted to cover some of the gap left by the closure of CVS by selling some basic necessities. The Elli, a convenience store in the Ellicott Food Court, also provides similar products to CVS, providing students on North campus an alternative to CVS or leaving campus.

Aftermath
UPD initially reported the fire appeared to be caused by a heater. The student claimed a UB dorm heater, behind her dresser, caused the fire. The student in question stated that she did not have renters insurance. Fire investigators finished analyzing the scene by 4:30 PM and relocated the girls to Creekside Village for temporary housing. The girl in question criticized the university for leaving them "without basic needs" like soap and toilet paper, items not normally provided by Campus Living.

Police initially questioned the girls to see if one of them had intentionally set fire to the dorm. The fire was deemed by the UPD deputy chief of police to not have been set intentionally or with criminal intent.

A GoFundMe page was started for the students and $1,730 was raised (as of May 21, 2025) to help the student since she lost most of her belongings including her laptop, wallet, and clothing. The student withdrew from UB for the rest of the semester but has since graduated.

One World Cafe is an international eatery located in Capen Hall that began construction in 2019 and opened in January 2022. The food options consist of Mediterranean, Indian, Asian, and an American grill. The cafe also includes pre-made options similar to what is found in the Capen Cafe, outside 1Capen. A unique selection of international snacks and beverages along with Kosher options can also be purchased.

Initial Plans
One World Cafe began as part of a $37.8 million investment in improving the campus. The intention was to provide additional dining options focused on international students. Construction began in May 2019. The name "One World Cafe" was chosen by a contest in 2018, and was entered as a suggestion by an aerospace engineering major who graduated in 2019. Original plans were to have the Cafe open for January 2020.

The original designed were done by architects at Cannon Design, Turner Construction Co. handled the construction, and Manning Squires Henning was the general contractor.

Opening
Due to delays in construction and shutdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, One World Cafe did not open officially until March 2022, with only two stations - "Kali Orexi", the Mediterranean station, and "Tikka Table", the Indian station - opening initially. The remaining stations - "The 1846 Grill," "Pan Asian," and "The Noodle Pavilion" - would open by Fall 2022.

The initial setup for One World Cafe included kiosks for ordering from the grill and Noodle Pavilion, which would later be removed. Self-checkout kiosks were included to allow for quick and easy checkout. These would also later be removed.

Reception
Initial reception of the One World Cafe was mixed. It provided more food options and well as plenty of seating and study area for students. However, the food was not as spectacular or traditional as students expected. Food quantity and cost were also common complaints among students.

Theft became common during busy lunch rushes, due to staff not being able to catch everyone leaving the self-checkout registers without paying. The amount of theft (and its monetary value) was never specified. However, in reponse, UB removed self-checkout from One World Cafe in 2024 and added cashiers.

Students additionally became unahppy in 2023 when the kiosks for "The 1846 Grill" and "Noodle Pavilion" were removed in favor of using the Get mobile app for mobile orders only. Per a Reddit thread from a now deleted account, people were mixed on this change. Most undergraduate students did not mind the change since it didn't affect them. However, graduate students and professors found it to be irritating since they do not typically use student ID, meal plans, or the mobile app. Wait times and unavailability on the app has also become a common complaint of One World Cafe.
Greiner Hall is a second-year only residence hall located on UB's North Campus. Known for its modern design and eco-friendly features, it offers suite-style living with amenities that appeal to many students.

Overview
Greiner Hall is the most recent residential building at UB, having finished construction in 2011. It has a capacity of 610 beds across 146 suites. Each suite consists of two bedrooms (each with two beds), a shared bathroom, and a walk-in closet space. As such, four people live in each suite of Greiner Hall. The target residents are second-year students (mainly sophomores), and includes an Honors Living Learning Community (LLC).

History and Construction
Construction began on Greiner Hall in November 2009 with original designs by CannonDesign and construction overseen by LPCiminelli. Construction of the dorm cost a little over $52 million and the building encompasses a space of 198,208 gross sq. ft.

Greiner Hall was officially dedicated and opened on August 19, 2011, being named for William R. Greiner (1934-2009), who joined the UB law faculty in 1967 and served as the university president from 1991-2004.

Popularity and Housing Selection
Securing a spot in Greiner Hall is difficult due to the competitive nature. Many students aim to live at Greiner because of its modern amenities and favorable location. As some students targeting Greiner may get slightly different housing selection times, it's critical for one to form a group with at least one student who holds an earlier registration time in order to get a chance to live there.

Students in the Honors College can apply to the Honors LLC, which has designated spaces in Greiner.

Sustainability and Features
Greiner Hall holds the LEED Gold Certification, featuring sustainable materials and systems, such as a system that draws from a lake on campus for irrigation and the use of recycled Tide laundry detergent bottles in the laundry room counters. The building is heated and cooled with a centrally controlled hydronic HVAC system, providing climate control through water-based temperature regulation. This means that, contrary to some belief, Greiner Hall is not air conditioned. The building and suites are typically around 72.5°F (22.5°C), and while there are thermostats, they do not tend to change the temperature by a significant amount, if at all. The rooms have high ceilings and feature cool white lighting.

The first floor of Greiner Hall features the Au Bon Pain cafe in the A Wing, which offers convenient dining options for soup and breakfast sandwiches. The B Wing of the 1st floor has study pods with personal lighting and whiteboards, as well as Lounge 13 - which features the only landline telephone still in service at Greiner Hall (as all other landline phones have been taken out of service). Classrooms are located in the B Wing and the C Wing of Greiner Hall, and are air conditioned separately from the rest of the building's HVAC system to ensure proper cooling when it's hot outside.

Student Experiences
Student opinions on Greiner Hall vary. Many find the modern nature of Greiner Hall to be convenient. On the other hand, some students report that the water-based cooling system can lead to rooms feeling warm, particularly during sudden temperature changes. Many students have also found the limited washers and dryers per floor lead to competition for usage, as there are only four washers and five dryers per floor of around 120 students. The front desk of Greiner Hall - where flat mail and some packages must be picked up - has hours that some find to be inconvenient. Further, some students have experienced issues with drain flies coming from their drains, leading to dead, fuzzy flies around their room.
